Claudio Quarta explores wine-growing micro-territories, aiming to express the authenticity of the native vines and their territories by exalting the unique heritage of culture and tradition they encompass - unlike standardised wines with “no soul”.Tenute Eméra is Claudio Quarta’s Puglia winery. Tenute Eméra is on the Ionian coast, on a strip of land eminently suitable for wine-growing.The estate covers 80 hectares, of which 50 were planted with vines in 2007 after an in-depth study of the local soils. The old Casino Nitti was a hunting lodge of the first Italian Prime Minister (1919-20) and is surrounded by greenery. The early twentieth-century wine-making areas (“palmenti”) inside the farmhouse are a legacy of its wine-growing heritage. They are now being restored in order to bring back the traditional method of treading grapes, integrated with modern methods of temperature control. The name of the winery refers to Hemera, a Greek divinity representing the day; this is a tribute to the culture of Magna Grecia and evokes the geographical position of the estate, on Italy’s eastern most strip of land where the sun rises first. In the heart of the Dop Lizzano area,Claudio Quarta traces a pathway for a“new day”in which modern know-how and technologies exalt the heritage of ancient skills. Besides the native varieties including Primitivo and Negroamaro, the winery has also planted international varieties like Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet and others, which express themselves in a special way on these soils.
